Community/ Live Build
Pangkor Island, Malaysia
Completed 2017
1,000sqft
Island Pavilion is a design and installation of an outdoor classroom for the local community, using locally harvested bamboo and traditional fixing method. Following an intensive workshop with En Rahim the bamboo expert, we managed to build the play hut in a week just in time for the opening of Pangkor Island Festival 2017.
Island Pavilion
Our other labour of love, Island Pavilion is an experimental outdoor classroom built out of bamboo. Our modus operandi is to get intimately connected with craftsmanship and materials. So we hired a bamboo master to teach us how to create structures out of the material. We practiced our newfound skills by building a smaller model of the pavilion for an Orang Asli village and then built the full-scale Island Pavilion on Pangkor. The entire project reminds us of a time when we were young and idealistic, making buildings with friends.
